After his death in 1998 there were frequents calls from Ystad residents for the great actor to be honoured with, as many expressed it, a statue. In 2001, the Culture Committee took action, allocating funds and assigning the Director of Ystad Art Museum at that time, Thomas Millroth, to organise a competition for the design of such a memorial. The chosen winner was artist and designer Jenny Ahlström from Onslunda with her controversial proposal for a sculpture in mirror mosaic, glass and concrete. The debate about this decision went on for a long time and it became quite a heated issue in the mass media. The proposal was a long way from the statue that so many people wanted to see. Initially, Ernst-Hugo Järegård’s surviving relatives were not wholly satisfied either, but after a time there was a reconciliation and they attended the unveiling in the summer of 2001. Like many other contentious public works of art, the sculpture has become a popular and eye-catching sight that many want to see, often when waiting for a train. Embedded in the glass mosaic are various black and white photos of Ernst-Hugo Järegård in his most well-known roles.\n\n Jenny Ahlström is an artist, graphic artist and designer. One location that was definitely in mind was the park, Bollhusparken. This rectangular setting was created around 1900 to act as a smooth transition from the old medieval town plan to the new rectilinear suburb, Östra förstaden. It was here that the major Leisure Exhibition was held in 1936. The exhibition aimed to convey the new spirit of the times, emphasising health and outdoor activities. What then could be better than the sculpture, Sun, which was acquired for Ystad in 1955 from a large exhibition at Norrviken Gardens. The almost two-meter-tall sculpture is cast in artificial stone and was placed in front of the reflective pool. Well-kept flower beds and rows of trees were part of the design.\n\n In 2021, the park department reorganised the park by renewing the plantations and making more green space available for leisure activities. The sculpture Sol has therefore been moved to a new location next to the shallow pool.\n\n The site is surrounded by three buildings designed by well-known architects. Bollhuset was designed by Hans Westman, originally as a restaurant for the exhibition Fritiden. The work is a fountain sculpture in bronze with stonemasonry in granite from north-east Skåne. It could certainly be claimed that it is Ystad’s most viewed work of art. The Brook Horse is a creature in Scandinavian mythology that was believed to live in rivers or brooks and was said to lure small children to climb onto its back and then take them down to the depths. Oscar Antonsson has rendered The Brook Horse in a demonic, almost triumphant, pose. The small children are now sitting on its back and are about to meet their fate in the watery depths. The sculpture is in the Art Nouveau style, which is particularly accentuated by the almost vegetative flowing mane.\n\n Oscar Antonsson studied sculpture in Italy. The Brook Horse was exhibited in Rome in 1927 and attracted great attention. A group of art lovers in Ystad took the initiative to try to buy the work and bring it to Ystad. They formed the Brook Horse Association in 1927 and succeeded in collecting funds to enable the purchase. So, it was actually Ystad’s residents who, through the association, donated the work of art to the town. The Brook Horse was unveiled at its site in the summer of 1928. The Brook Horse Association was reformed in 1929 as the Ystad Art Association, which was instrumental in establishing Ystad Art Museum in 1936. \n\n Oscar Antonsson began his career as an academic in Lund. At Pilgrändshuset – Ystad’s oldest preserved half-timbered building with origins in the 1500s – there is beautiful little garden with flowers and herbs. The small fountain sculpture, The Goose Girl, has stood here since 1949. She stands on a brick base and is cast in bronze. The Goose Girl has a determined look on her face and is in the process of pulling off her dress. Behind her, the goose flaps nervously. From his beak a jet of water streams down into the basin. The Goose Girl was originally a legendary being who has often inspired both artists and writers. A well-known example is Nataly von Eschstruth, who wrote the novel, Gänseliesel. The Swedish edition, entitled Gåsalisa, was published in 1891. Nils Olsson, Art Curator and Director of Tourism, had spotted Ada in the artist’s studio and thought she would be very suitable for the square. There was a series of negotiations with the heirs about the price. Ystad Municipality felt she was too expensive. In the end, after some haggling, they agreed on a price and since then Ada has been one of Ystad residents’ favourites. In 1995, a proposal to move Ada prompted loud protests in Ystad. The birds had previously been placed in the harbour area and by the railway station. When they came to Gröningen – the green open space by the marina – their placement went a little awry. The story is as follows: The Seagulls is a gift from the twin-town of Ekenäs in gratitude for the help Ystad gave to Finland during the war years of 1939-1944. The sculpture is a strong symbol of the twin-town concept. The twin-town movement, originally an inter-Nordic cultural exchange, began in connection with Swedish aid to Finland during the Second World War. Ekenäs, south-west of Helsinki, became Ystad’s twin-town in Finland at an early stage. A strong and widespread commitment in Ystad led to extensive support for Ekenäs.\n\n The pedestal bears the following inscription: “Strong wings bear the gift of goodwill. A grateful reminder of sacrifices in troubled times. Erected by the twin-town Ekenäs in 1963.” A similar sculpture stands in Ekenäs where the gulls’ direction of flight is towards Ystad. It was therefore important that Ystad’s gulls should have their beaks pointing towards Ekenäs, but this was not the case when The Seagulls was put in place at Gröningen. Before it was changed, many opinions were aired in the town on whether gulls actually fly over land or sea. But, when it became clear that the direction The Seagulls faced was very important for the artwork, the mistake was corrected. \n\n The Finnish artist Gunnar Elfgren started his studies at the Finnish Art Society’s Drawing School 1920-1921. He therefore chose to create the artwork in bronze on a granite pedestal from the stonemasonry company, Ystads Stenhuggeri. Eventually, he found the organic and soft form that works so well in the setting. He took inspiration from one of his great interests; nature. The inside of the sculpture is gilded. To the sculpture Sigvard Nilsson added the words: “Resting in the Trust that Creates the World”, which are carved on the granite pedestal. It is made of stainless steel and plexiglass, materials that Bie Norling often uses in her sculptures.\n\n Bie Norling, born in 1937, has been painting and sculpting for over fifty years. She often adapts the artwork to the current location, which is also apparent in the two previous works of art she has made in Ystad: The telephone kiosk at the intersection of Lingsgatan and Maria Munthes gata, and the Untitled sculpture group in the Regiment area.\n\n" } , {"Titel":"Yggdrasil", "id": "108", "Konstnär":"Pergon, Lage (1966-)", "Material":"Bronze", "År":"2011", "Dimensioner":"Height: 2.2m incl plinth", "Placering":"Pantzargatan 25G in the Tankbåten quarter", "Latitude":"55.426662", "Longitude":"13.801474", "Ägare":"AB Ystadbostäder", "Bild":[ {"url":"http://ystadskulpturpark.se/images/90.jpg"} ], "Audio":[ {"url":"http://ystadskulpturpark.se/files/eng_17_Yggdrasil.mp3"} ], "Beskrivning":"The sculpture on Pantzargatan is entitled Yggdrasil. Initially, it was placed outside Ystad Art Museum. However, the site did not do it justice, as the artist had intended it as a fountain sculpture and the muscular nature of the depiction would be accentuated when the granite was covered with running water. It was then placed in the shallow water pool outside Ystad Town Library, but it was not possible to add the water effect there either. It now stands in a square – Mölletorget – where, after many dry years, the water effect is now in action. The sculpture’s title, Monument to the Last Dodo, alludes to the large bird that lived isolated on Mauritius. It became extinct as early as the 1600s, because it could not fly and was thus easy prey for both people and other animals. \n\n Björn Selder was born in Stockholm. He was a painter, graphic artist and sculptor whose first solo exhibition was in 1961. He was mainly active as a sculptor, focusing on fountain sculptures. In 1969, Björn Selder was one of the initiators of the Artists’ Collective Workshop in Stockholm and of the now defunct House of Sculpture in Vinterviken in Stockholm. Its design, with a characteristic 1800s classical facade, was based on a theatre in Leipzig. The theatre has always been the pride of Ystad and is also loved by all the artists who have performed there. A garden with gravel paths was created in front of the theatre.\n\n Ada and Rudolf Möller, a theatre-loving couple from Ystad, had the idea of complementing the theatre park with a work of art. They therefore donated SEK 100 000 to Ystad Municipality for that purpose. One condition was that the sculpture was to have a ballet motif. Selected artists were invited to take part in a competition. The winner was Birgitta Stenberg-Hultén. Her idea was a dancing couple, cast in bronze, who with thin, almost mannered, extended bodies perform a classical pas de deux. The sculpture was unveiled with pomp and ceremony in 1976.\n\n Birgitta Stenberg-Hultén was educated at Lena Börjesson’s Sculpture School in Stockholm. Along one edge of the park towards the town centre there is still a small part of the moat that was once outside the town ramparts. In the centre of the park is a restaurant pavilion in well-preserved Art Nouveau style and in front of this is a circular flowerbed with a round fountain. In the fountain is The Cobbler’s Boy who holds up a tatty boot from which water is running. The sculpture is cast in bronze. In previous lists of the town’s works of art, the sculpture has been regarded as a little “kitsch” and has therefore not always been included. One of the powerful men of the early 1900s, wholesaler, politician and Danish vice-consul Hugo Schultz, donated The Cobbler’s Boy in 1918 for the town’s ornamentation.
