Sculpture group by Ingrid Furre.

This sculpture group is inserted in the paving along Surbrunnsvägen, between the Library and Ystads Gymnasium. The pieces, which have been named “Sleeping Teachers”, consist of several sculptures in granite, all carved by hand. Each piece is unique, although some have similar shapes.

The artist Ingrid Furre has related to the place and its history when she worked out her idea. The pieces can evoke different associations. They can be seen as water drops or their own alphabet consisting of different characters or pictures. There are carvings in the stones that bring to mind historical rock carvings and rune stones. At the same time, one can also associate with the emojis of our time.

The sculptures in the group will eventually be expanded to the nearby street spaces on Industrigatan and Disponentgatan.

Ystad Municipality applies the 1%-rule, which means that 1% of the budget for major renovations and new public buildings and environments is set aside for artistic design. The “Sleeping Teachers” were created especially for the street space Surbrunnsvägen, Disponentgatan and Industrigatan when these were renovated in 2021.

Ingrid Furre, born in 1983 in Stavanger, Norway, is a poet and artist. She is educated at Malmö Art Academy, and lives and works in Malmö.
